I love the Total Gym XLS! I use to be into body building and worked a lot with weights, but the problem with weights is that they can give you allot of stress on your joints and if are not careful then you could drop plates on yourself of even can hurt yourself so badly with them. Some people think that if you are into Body Building, you cannot use the Total Gym to build big muscles, that's not true! Because even in the world of body building it is not about "How Much" weight that you can lift, but "how" lift that counts! With a little know-how of the Total Gym XLS with optional weight bar can be more than enough for you than enough weight to build muscle mass quickly! For example, bear with me for a little while; I go into details as to its serious resistance potential. To start things off the maximum weight limit for the XLS is rated at 400 pounds. Now, just to give you an idea, no matter whether the use of cables or pulley, along with your own body weight you will also be lifting the weight of the glide board itself somewhere between 15 to 25 pounds, but I'm not so sure about that, so that for the sake of argument let’s say that the slide board is 20 pounds. If you use the optional weight bar with weights and you add on about 100 pounds, which is basically lifting a 120 pound glide along with your own body weight! Well, if you do the math, you will understand better why I say that the Total Gym "Can" be used for the serious Body Builders to build muscle.

Total Gym is an excellent exercise for anyone 12-120 years of age. The TG is a great piece of equipment, easy to use, TG machinery and equipment are made from high quality materials.
The TG has given me a better workout than what my gym did, I could tell the difference in less than a week. I bought the ab crunch, dip bars, the bar to add extra weight and shoulder press. I spent 6-8 minutes of training once in the morning in the evening and I feel great.
I love the option of working out anytime 24/7, I usually exercise a few times a day. My first practice is from TG-DVD and the other two time is only have to working out my abs, back, chest .. .
I wish I had ordered it sooner!

I ordered this item and for some reason, the one who sold it never sent it to me. I had a hold of Amazon twice about this product twice and both times people were very friendly, kind, and helped in every way. I was very disappointed with the seller not sending me to send me total gym, but I was glad Amazon made "not getting it" more comfortable.
On a side note to make the general public happy, because I bought this machine and have fun and enjoy with this total gym, I have lost 28 pounds and 6 pants sizes and I have recommended this Total Gym XLS to others. So sorry to let people know that my experience with Amazon WAS enjoyable instead of giving information on the actual equipment. I also bought the course of the series DVD set and found it very helpful to give me information about how to properly training and the right muscles to use.

I used the Total Gym XLS for about nine months. No doubt the about its design and quality of workouts. I mainly use as an all-around body workout to start the day. Endless possibilities make it very versatile and keep all workouts so fresh.
I am 5 '10 ", 185 pounds, far from the advertised maximum capacity of 400 pounds is recommended.
I'm not satisfied with the overall quality. When I use the extra money for top-end model, I have high expectations. This model failed to meet them, and I wonder if I would have been just a well served with one of the two lower end units. Wheels and bearings, just not good. My unit started beeping and whistling right about the six months point, but it wasn’t until it became distractingly noise at about eighth month that I became concerned.
The parts have a six-month warranty. Even though I had taken measures in this period, I would be have the same problem again (I suppose). Last time I buy aftermarket wheels / Huck rental products for $75 (including S/H). The machine is now feeling like I expected, better than the original. Better smooth.
Other features of the XLS over the other models (with my comments):
- 400 lbs load capacity for overall strength and stability (if an average 185 # user wore out the wheels....??)
Upgraded comfort system (True. .. good quality) - Upgraded pulley and cable system (so far no problems)
- Flexible nylon strap handles (This is an upgrade for smaller models, but I haven’t tried a different style for comparison)
- Upgraded squat stand (Again, an upgrade on other models)
- Padded glide board with head support (Redundant)
- Chrome Package (whoopee)
- Load capacity - more than 80 exercises (OK. .. not quite sure why the lower models show a decrease of 40 and 60 ... must not have some of the attachments)
Unlike the first function (# 400), I cannot complain. There is no doubt that the XLS is clearly a much better machine than the models produced in Dick and Sears.
Total Gym 2000 and 3000 advertise the maximum capacity of 250 and 300 pounds, respectively. Further research into the quality of these models’ wheel bearings should be part of the equation. It would be worthwhile to buy one of these models and high quality Huck upgraded wheels (also have other parts) when the time comes.
3 stars is a bit exaggerated low-balled exaggeratoin. If I could, I would say 3.8 on my Amazon subjective scale. Just below the 4.0 of my happy and glad that I can buy. But rounding up 4 stars minimizing my current dismay about shelling out $75 a few months after the warranty period.
I will send this review on Total Gym Direct where I bought it (for ~$[...], not the current ~$[...])...let's see if it makes it past the editors.

We had seen so many different types of equipment; we really did not know what a good workout without killing us in this process. My wife and I were very happy when we received the Total Gym XLS with minimal setup (10 minutes) and we were following the DVD moments afterwards. What a great workout! We also have a Bowflex, but this new equipment, can do that the Bowflex can’t. We use them together, and recommend the Total Gym to anyone willing to exercise 15 minutes every other day.
